Accelerated Reader Program
|
Holy Child Catholic has supported an Accelerated Reader Program since 1987. We have over 1500 computerized tests and the matching book titles, covering levels K thru 8, in our school library. Our goal is to help students read for the sheer love of reading. Although teachers can teach basic literacy skills, the joy of reading is something each student must discover for themselves. The Accelerated Reader provides a motivational framework that encourages students to practice and improve reading skills while reading authentic literature. Students must read an unabridged copy of the book in order to be successful on an AR test. Seeing the movie or watching a video of the story will not provide enough information to pass a test. It is recommended that each student set two goals: one for the number of points to be achieved during the academic quarter, and the other for the average percent of correct answers on book tests (this should be set at 85%). They should discuss their goals with their Language Arts teacher who will be monitoring their progress in the program. AR can be checked by Title, Author, Point System or Reading / Interest Level. We are constantly adding new books to the collection along with test disks to match. Here is an Excel spreadsheet that you can sort by these categories. But, for the very latest additions the student should check the AR folder in the school library. If you have a question about this program you can email us at stholychild@comcast.net
